2017 Asia Fest
On Saturday, May 13, the Taiwanese Heritage Society of Houston (THSH) participated in 2017 Asia Fest at the Asia Society Texas Center nearby downtown Houston. The event had a number of groups and organizations that represented different parts of Asia. Each group or organization set up booths to showcase their own unique culture and customs. The purpose of our participation in this event was to expose Taiwanese cultures, share Taiwan experience, and promote THSH to the mainstream Americans.
In the morning, our volunteers performed the glove puppet show in the central stage of the festival. A Taiwanese Youth Society Member, Danica, introduced the audience to the traditional performance of the show and the crew performed the act impeccably. Our booth sold an abundance of crafts that were handmade by our volunteers. All of the crafts were related to Taiwanese culture such as the Taiwan-shaped soap, the ocarina, and the bags and apron were made with the Hakka styled fabric. We also sold Taiwanese pineapple pastries and cookbooks of Taiwanese dishes. Pamphlets were handed out to participants to attract their interests in THSH. Set aside these showcasts and, as always, an event cannot be successful without peoples' engagement. THSH is fortunate to have many volunteer members came to support this great event.

2017 What This Can be? An Interactive Literature/Art Project
The children’s arts and literature event on March 25 was filled with fun and creativity. Both children and their parents/grandparents participated. After a short introduction by YuRu on painting techniques, the shape of Taiwan turned into many things – dolphin, puppy, mouse, corn cob, multi-color shimmery island, flower bouquet, a leaf, queen’s head, a deer in cherry blossoms ...etc. This art event was combined with “inprint poetry buskers” for festivals - a literature element was added to make this event even more exciting. Every artist got to talk about his/her art work and received a fun poem inspired by the discussion between the artists and the poets. We all enjoyed activities like this which brought families and friends together to create memories as a community while having a great time!
